A Guide to
The Barony of Tolon

Intro:
The northernmost barony is TOLON, ruled by Baron Jurenst. His barony houses the College Amagigo, the College of Mages. It is commonly believed that Jurenst is a puppet of the College.

Brief History:
480 A secret brotherhood of mages, The Affiliates Amagigo, construct a tower at the mouth of the Sunbolode River. They bring many craftsman and workers to the remote area. The newly founded city of Tonn quickly becomes one of the largest cities on the continent as the great wealth the mages are spending to construct their city creates a gold rush. Within a year they apply for admission to Hurva as a new Barony. They are granted all of the lands north of Valsar and east of the Kingdom of Fyard and all of the islands off of the coast of those lands. Thus the Barony of Tonn's Land (which was soon renamed Tolon) was founded.
520 Ghant University founded.
781 Despite heated protests from the city of Palk, The Oracle of Torodin is moved from Palk to The Tower of Mysteries in Tonn. This created a breach between the shrine in Palk and the rest of the church of Torodin that continues to the present day. The city residents of Palk remain resentful towards residents of Tonn and visiting priests of Torodin.

Borders:
The initial land granted to the barony of Tolon was all of the lands north of Valsar and east of the Kingdom of Fyard and all of the islands off of the coast of those lands. The limits of the Shadowcast Mountain range are the excepted southeast boundary. Ellem's Ford marks the limits of the barony along the Sunbolode River and the Firth of Beckily is the western coastal boundary. As the boundary with Valsar runs through hundreds of miles of uncivilized lands, it has only been roughly drawn.

General Feel of Placenames:
Tolon was settled by a combination of human mages and gold seekers. Places named by mages tend to either be of the sort that honors some famous mage or magical spell or item, or were coined by intellectual mages who enjoyed delving deep into various languages to generate 'cool' sounding names that occasionally have some deep meaning or intelligentsia humor behind them.

Many other places were named by the scores of humans and demihumans settlers from all over who realized just how much gold the Affiliates Amagigo were laying out to carve out this wilderness in such a quick and grand fashion. These placenames tend to be very straightforward. Real world examples of these types of placenames can be found in Australia and the non-indian names in western Canada and Alaska.

Other Nomenclature:

Tolon: "Tolonian"
Tonn: "Tonnannite". "Tonn" is reserved for finely crafted goods, such as "Tonn Sherry". "Tonner" is a derogatory term that usually implies snobbery.

Major Geographical Features:

Major Rivers:

Sunbolode River
By the time this river reaches the city of Tonn, its waters are stained deep reddish brown from the clay soil of the Cerise mountains. Its name is derived from an obscure ancient nomadic tongue and literally translates as, "Sunube's Blood".
Due to its proximity to Tonn and Ghant University, there have been many studies of the river's fauna. The following list is by no means comprehensive, but is a good overview.
Common - Giant Beavers, Giant Otters, Giant Pike/Gar, Swan, Salmon
Rare - Water Weird, Crystal Ooze, Nixie, Water Naga, Quipper

Tumblestone River
A major tributary of the Sunbolode, it winds its way northwest across the plains. It has a very swift current and a rocky bottom.

Cerise Mountains
Mountain range in the north of Tolon. Some of the largest (measured by both height and breadth) mountains in Hurva are those within this chain. Their year-round snowcapped peaks form a sharp contrast to the deep purplish red of the rocks and soil of the lower elevations.
Due to its proximity to Tonn and Ghant University, there have been many studies of the fauna of both the highlands and valleys of the region. The following list is by no means comprehensive, but is a good overview.
Animals - Brown Bears, Wild Dogs, Snakes, Wild Boar, Ravens, Falcons, Ram, Badger, Skunk, Moose, White Rabbits
Uncommon - Cave Bears, Ice Lizards, Giant Lynx, Giant Owls, Giant Ram, Trolls, Ice Trolls, Wolves, Winter Wolves, Giant Eagles, Gargoyles/Margoyles, Giant Goat, Ogres, Pegasus, Giant Wasp, Griffins, Kobolds
Rare - Dragons (White/Silver), Giants (Frost/Mountain/and rarely Verbeeg), Hoar Fox, Remoraz, Yeti, Blood Hawk, Displacer Beast, Disenchanter, Leucrotta, Brain Mole, Galeb Duhr

Spirewood Forest
The stands of immense pine trees along the northwest and northern coast of Tolon include more than a few sections with giant redwoods and sequoia trees. This area is sometimes described as taiga by less read scholars, though its climate is not nearly harsh enough to be described in that way—in fact, summers can be quite pleasant there.

Tanglewood Forest
Thick underbrush makes this dense forest of eastern Tolon very difficult to navigate.

Shadowcast Mountains
Mountain range of the Palims.

Great Northern Plain
Almost as mind numbingly flat as the Great Central Plain, at least the Great Northern Plain is broken up by a number of tiny geographical features such as forests and bogs. A number of human & nonhuman (such as wemic & gnolls) nomadic tribes live in this region. Bulette prey on the numerous herdbeasts and animals (bison, antelopes, prairie dogs, coyotes, wild horses, hares, prairie fowl are the most common animals encountered) of the region, but also make it unsafe for horseback travel. Powerful lightening storms and occasional tornados occur throughout the summer months.

_____ (farmlands along Sunbolode in western Tolon)
The fertile floodplains of the Sunbolode are Tolon's breadbasket. Since the city of Tonn itself has little to no farmland around it, most of its produce either comes in by ocean ship or by river barge. Still under the ducal authority of the Duchy of Tonn, there are several counties in this area that ship most of their harvest to Tonn. They are always seeking adventurous types to guard their shipments.

_____ (rolling hills along Sunbolode in western Tolon - in the SW Cerise Mountains)
There are several counties in these areas that have the same arrangement as those in the floodplains. These communities raise cattle, sheep, goats and other farm animals.

Plains of Despair
An ancient battle (predating the use of the Hurvan Year by perhaps centuries) between the armies of a mage and a cleric of Athelstan has left this small section of the Great Northern Plain near the southern most point of the Shadowcast Mountains practically devoid of life.

_____ (two large islands off the coast)
Fourteen larger and numerous smaller islands off of northeast coast. Many of these have been claimed by very powerful mages seeking isolation.

_____ (lone island off north coast)

_____ (bay/gulf which cuts into Tolon and contains many of those islands)

_____ (smaller bay/gulf in the bigger bay which Tonn sits on.)

Named Cities, towns & villages:

Tonn (M)
Home to Ghant University and the Affiliates Amagigo.

Fort Coralis (T)
Basically nothing more than a RHA outpost. The RHA maintains a number of these not just in Tolon, but throughout the realm, to try to keep the numerous humanoid tribes and monsters of certain areas somewhat in check.

Kaldarek (T)
A town so small as to barely mention a note. It serves as a trading area for the small number of farms that try to scrape out an existence just northwest of the Plains of Despair.
